National Rainbow College Fund Launches Advisory Council to Support LGBTQ+ Students

The National Rainbow College Fund, an initiative powered by the San Diego Foundation (SDF), has taken a significant step forward by forming its Advisory Council. This council is tasked with guiding the fund's efforts to provide scholarships exclusively for LGBTQ+ students, addressing the unique challenges these individuals face in pursuing higher education. The formation of this council underscores the fund's commitment to fostering equity and inclusivity in the academic sphere.

Mark Stuart, SDF President and CEO, highlighted the critical nature of this initiative, pointing out the barriers LGBTQ+ students often encounter, such as social acceptance issues, mental health challenges, and family rejection. These obstacles can significantly hinder their ability to afford college and achieve long-term economic stability. The National Rainbow College Fund aims to mitigate these challenges by offering financial support and advocacy, starting with California in 2025, with aspirations to expand nationwide.

The Advisory Council is composed of distinguished individuals from various fields, each bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy. Members include Jarrett Barrios, Amanda Montgomery, Dr. Becky Petitt, Joyce Rowland, and Allen Young. Their diverse backgrounds in public service, institutional investor relations, equity and inclusion in higher education, human resources, and government affairs will be instrumental in shaping the fund's strategies and ensuring its success.

Each selected student will receive a $2,500 scholarship, with the application period running from January 15 to March 5, 2025. A key aspect of the initiative is the emphasis on maintaining applicants' privacy, ensuring a safe and supportive application process. Beyond financial aid, the National Rainbow College Fund seeks to address systemic barriers, offering a model that could inspire similar programs across the country, thereby making higher education more accessible to LGBTQ+ students everywhere.
